Best class I've ever taken here!! Prof Yasuda is so kind and understanding and makes sure the class isn't at all boring. We got to watch anime sometimes for homework and I got to even present on a manga; plus all the other assigned readings are genuinely interesting enough that it barely feels like homework. Grades are based off attendance, weekly ~200 word discussion posts on readings, in-class 5 question reading comprehension quizzes (not hard), 1 presentation (~25 minutes, not difficult at all to prepare), and 1 final essay (2000 words, fun options); very very light workload overall and it never felt overwhelming since class was only once a week. Most people in class were East Asian Studies / Japanese majors/minors, but you definitely don't need to be doing that to do well in the class since it's all in English. I highly highly recommend this class to anyone regardless of whether or not you already have an interest in Japanese culture/literature!
I absolutely loved Professor Yasuda's class! She's an incredibly friendly and passionate professor who makes the course engaging and interesting. The coursework consists of short weekly reading responses, mini reading quizzes, a presentation, and a final paper—all of which are well-explained and easy to keep up with if you keep track of readings. The content is also really interesting, especially as someone who hadn't taken anything in the East Asian Language, Literature, and Cultures department at all. If you like reading, and especially if you like modern Japanese lit, I would strongly recommend this class!
