I took this class as a backup because I couldn’t get into the MDST class I wanted, but it ended up being one of my favorite classes that semester!
This class is a 2.5 hour, once a week lecture that revolves mostly around discussion. Students are given a chance (are required) to lead the class discussion at least once in the year. The reading is heavy and you have to write a full page front and back reflection on the reading for each week, print it, and bring it to class. Discussion in class is based entirely off of the reading and everyone is required to talk.
Although that may sound intimidating, I really loved it. The material is very interesting and engaging. This made the long readings interesting and not feel like a chore. The professor is very knowledgeable and willing to help. He does not grade very difficultly either.
I had no previous knowledge of Japan or Japanese language/literature but I was still able to do very well. #tCFS24
