If you want to fulfill the second writing requirement, don't take this class. I walked in with high hopes and it was not what I expected. Don't trust the syllabus for anything except the weekly readings' page numbers because the professor changed the expectations for the assignments randomly throughout the semester. The workload consisted of a presentation and subsequent write up and a final paper, which wasn't unmanageable but don't expect feedback on any assignments even at the end of the semester. The grade given was more based on "vibes" than set expectations because no rubric or assignment description were provided. There was also no discussion on the final paper until a few weeks before the semester's end which created a huge time crunch if you're taking other classes with midterms late in the semester. You'll spend the entire semester listening to student presentations on the readings with the professor only participating with interjections on the student's presentation. There were no lessons on the books' content or how to become a better writer, which would've been helpful because some of the books were complex and writing expectations were extremely unclear. The class also looked at the topic from an African/francophone diasporic perspective which I wasn't expecting, but the readings weren't too hard to get through excluding one book that was quite dense and confusing. Overall, the workload isn't horrible but the classroom experience and lack of feedback really took away from the course and I would recommend choosing a different SWR.
