I took this course as a pre-req for psychology major and I earned an A. This class's A line is 95%, which could sound challenging but is actually very doable considering how the course content isn't that challenging. The grade is quarterly distributed to weekly homework, 2 exams, and one final project. Professor Afriye is definitely one of the nicest professor you could get these days and he truly cares about his students too. Although I don't go to lectures very often, the online recordings and various codes that professor sends out on Collab is sufficient for students to learn and do well on exams. You can team up for the finals, but you definitely need to find good teammates very ahead of time (like the 1st week or so), so don't hesitate to take this class!
I thought the class was really easy, but that was because I took AP Statistics in high school - if you have any prior statistical knowledge, and somewhat of an introduction to programming, this class should be super easy. His exams are open note, and the weekly homework assignments mirror the in class demos exactly. I did really well in his class because I already knew the content and he posted his R scripts. We also used Piazza which was really helpful for answering smaller questions and he also answered them frequently. Overall, really easy class to get an A in. #tCFfall2021
Interesting and manageable class. Prof is a great guy who really wants you to do well. Weekly homework (can be on the longer side) but you have a week to do them so splitting it up makes it easy to get it done. 2 exams, I didn't do well on the first exam but second was a lot easier. Group final project which tends to bring up your grade. Gained a good introductory knowledge of coding in R from this class, would recommend.
Prince Afriyie should be named King Afriyie because that's what he is. He's super nice, super helpful, and always has a very positive attitude that makes the class much more enjoyable. This class was a fairly easy A. There's one problem set assigned every week for homework that's super doable and doesn't take too much time. Two quizzes throughout the semester, both were online with a mixture of multiple choice questions and some coding questions. The group final project involves finding a data set, manipulating it, making some graphs, then making a slideshow and a 20 minute video presentation on it. It can be a little difficult at time to keep track of all the different functions in R, so I would recommend going to every class and taking good notes on all of those.
This class was extremely interesting and I felt as though I learned a lot. Grade is composed of 25% homeworks (super easy, TAs/assistants are always there to help), 25% exam 1, 25% exam 2, and 25% final project. I found the exams for this class extremely difficult (did worse of exam 2 even though it was supposedly easier) and time was tight. However, I enjoyed the final project (although I recommend working alone some group members made this more difficult than it needed to be). Finishing the final project (coding and 20 min presentation on dataset of your choice) was extremely rewarding and I think I got a lot from this project and class. Prince is absolutely amazing, extremely friendly, genuinely cares about his students, and even occasionally shows pictures of his adorable kid. Definitely take notes in R (not on paper) and save the code and keep a running list of functions and what they do. Start the final project early (look for a dataset ASAP) and you will be fine! Hard to do extremely well in this class but still worth it in my opinion.
This was an enjoyable, well taught course for sure! I would disagree with those who said it was an easy A, as the exams were very difficult. The homework and final project were super interesting and if you put in the effort, it's easy to do well there, so that balances things out. I got a B in the course, although I did not do very well on either exam, but did well on homework and the final project. Overall, would recommend, but don't go in thinking it'll be easy.
What a class! This was such a fun and interesting class in learning about data science techniques and statistics.
The teacher was very understanding and knowledgeable about statistics and data science. He tried to help students as much as he could and respected all opinions.
The weekly homeworks were manageable and not very long (maximum 2 hours), although there is a slight learning curve at the beginning of the course if you don't have any prior programming experience. If you have any prior programming experience or have taken a course in statistics before (like AP Stats), then this class will be a lot easier for you.
There were 2 exams (1 required live coding, 1 didn't require any live coding) and both were representative of what we had learned in the course. There was also a final project which was a great review of the whole course.
This was a great course overall and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about data science! #tCFfall22
I loved this class. Prince does an exceptional job with going over all the information. The class has two exams and a final project. The first exam was part multiple choice, and partly live coding, and the second exam was all multiple choice. If you have some prior coding experience, R may come slightly easier to you, but it's a pretty easy coding language to pick up. The second exam I found more difficult, but this may be because I was a little more checked out at this point in the semester. Every week there's a homework assignment (It doesn't take very long), and the lowest homework grade is dropped. Just make sure you submit it in the right format and follow the instructions, and this should be a boost in your average. I really learned a lot with this class, and it has actual applications that you could use with a real life job. My favorite thing we learned was data scraping on websites into R studio. #tCFfall22
This class was super interesting and Afriyie is one of the most enjoyable professors I've taken a class with. The class consisted of weekly homework that applied concepts we learned in class, two exams (the midterm tested on coding and the final on class concepts), and a final project (group or individual). Afriyie was fun to learn from - he likes to make jokes in class and use real-world examples to support the programming concepts we learned in class.
The class content included general R concepts, data wrangling, data visualization, and regression/KNN. He spent the first half of the class largely on wrangling and the second half on visualization/regression. The weekly homework was not difficult once you got the hang of it, but some grading really depended on how picky the individual TAs were. Collaboration was allowed on homework as long as everyone typed their own work. Both exams were fair and the final project was not difficult if you spread it out over time. The project consisted of a 20ish-minute video presenting a holistic analysis of a dataset, including all of the concepts we learned in class. Overall I really enjoyed the class and would really recommend Afriyie, especially from someone with no data science experience. I much preferred it knocking out a math requirement over taking calc or something like that.
This class is amazing. Professor Afriyie is so sweet and nice, and he explains the material very well. The tests are open note and easy, the weekly homeworks are easy and fun, and I never once felt stress in this class while still learning a ton! Highly highly recommend. And go to lecture, it's worth it!
