I really can't recommend this class enough. Genuinely one of the most enjoyable, engaging, and interesting classes I have taken at UVA, and I would say that anyone with a passing interest in the philosophy of gender and sexuality would get a lot from this class.
The class is graded on only a few assignments: two short papers, eight weekly write-ups (you literally just turn in a question that you asked in class) and a final paper. I found Prof. Payton to be a fair and quite lenient grader, while still giving you feedback that improves your writing and your thinking.
The class content is really engaging as well. Prof. Payton taught it more as a seminar, where you'd read at home and spend the entire class time discussing the reading and your thoughts on it. When Prof. Payton did lecture, it was generally only for ten minutes, and it was always engaging. Prof. Payton's love for and knowledge on the subject really came through and I found our in-class discussions to be thought-provoking and engaging. I can honestly say I looked forward to every class, which isn't something I say often.
In conclusion - PLEASE take this course if you think you'll enjoy it. It made this semester a whole lot better.
