I LOVED this class!!! Professor McGrady is the best, and manages to make medieval French literature something interesting to read and talk about. The workload was very bearable-- there were a couple of hours of reading a week (but it was very doable) and three 5-page essays throughout the semester that weren't graded too harshly. If you participate during discussions and put some effort into your essays, you'll end with an A/A-.

I absolutely loved this class. While I was disappointed that this did not count towards the French major (since it is taught in English), this was HANDS-DOWN the most interesting and engaging class that I have taken in the French department. Professor McGrady is incredibly passionate about her work, and incorporates a unique WGS approach to the course. While I never claimed to be a fan of medieval literature, the works in translation that we read were surprisingly fun to read. The class environment is warm and accepting-- definitely felt like a tight-knit community by the end. Basically a guaranteed A if you apply yourself and compose thoughtful essays.

This was an awesome class. This was cross-listed as a WGS class and an FRTR class and I was excited to take a course that tackled an interesting topic from two different perspectives. As a history major, I found this class very interesting and appreciated learning about a period and place that the history department tends to ignore. The class is not that much work. You usually do about 2-3 hours of reading to prepare for class and McGrady picks really interesting readings that are worth doing. I read for every class and don't regret it. A lot of our grade was based on participation and doing the readings makes participation easily and the class discussion more enjoyable. There were a few short 2 page response papers based on the readings and plus a longer essay and a short 4-5 page final paper. McGrady is also a super nice professor which made the class ten times more enjoyable and she loves participation which really helps your grade in the end. I HIGHLY recommend this class. I only missed class once because I was too sick to go and I am genuinely going to miss it.
