Sree is a very, very admirable person. She is one of the few professors situated in the College who has done something outside a research institution. Her knowledge, "feeling", and perspective on development is priceless in such an intellectual bubble as UVa. I would recommend this course to anyone thinking about development or who thinks they know about development. It challenged my conceptions of how the Global North and South ought to be linked, and in many ways challenged my place in the North.
That all being said, do not take this class if you merely want to fulfill requirements. Without being immersed in the subject matter, it is a rather dry class through which to sit. The 2.5hrs will drag if you have a similarly quiet group of students as I did. Despite the listing as a seminar, it is better described as a small lecture. This course can be very rewarding for anyone who wants to work in South Asian development, and who wants [or needs] a perspective to counterbalance notions of uplift.
