KD is the man. He is super nice, extremely intelligent and just a genuinely interesting guy to talk to. I especially love the fact that he tells us to disregard all the "structured writing" BS we learned in high school and lets us be more creative in our writing. This class is not a ton of work, as you just have readings for each class, 3 long essays, and shorter writing assignments periodically. Some classes are a little dry because we will spend the entire time talking about one reading, but a lot of the conversations are very interesting and I know for a fact that this class (if you are taking the one on food) is more interesting than many other ENWRs. KD appears to grade essays a little hard at first, but you get to meet with him to talk about them and then revise them if you choose. He really wants students to become stronger, more analytical and more open-minded writers in the end.
KD is super cool and knowledgable. I took his "Food and Culture" class and learned so much more than I thought there could be about food. The readings are not too long, and they are very intriguing. We had three big essays. The prompts were somewhat vague, but I liked the freedom in that and enjoyed writing and reading my peer's writing. The class is somewhat unstructured because KD can sometimes go off on tangents, but the tangents are pretty interesting and worthwhile to listen to. This was a fun, manageable first year writing class, and I would definitely recommend.
