I did not enjoy the Visions of Politics course. The primary reason why was because of Professor Donahue-Ochoa. I found his expectations to be quite high and his grading to be way too harsh for an engagement. He has terrible handwriting, gives unclear instructions and interrupts students when they are speaking.
I absolutely did not enjoy his Visions of Politics engagement course. Professor Donahue-Ochoa didn't seem interested in teaching his students, instead choosing to perform and write terribly on the white board. His grading is unnecessarily harsh and weirdly specific (3.31/3.5???). There seems to be no rhyme or reason to his grading and he has unreasonable expectations for an engagement. I was excited going into the course because I'm very interested in politics, but I left feeling very disappointed. His teaching was dull and erratic. Donahue-Ochoa is also terrible at responding to emails in a timely fashion, if at all. I couldn't recommend this course less.
Quite confused about the rest of the reviews here. Tom was an incredibly passionate professor, and his personality really showed throughout his lessons. He would sometimes nitpick an assignment by taking off .1 off full credit, but it wasn't harmful whatsoever. The class went into the basics/fundamentals of various political ideologies, which is great for anyone, no matter what your major is. Assignments were quite simple: some readings (sometimes long, but you could easily skim through them and understand on days you may not be able to get through it all), and then journaling on them. Instead of a midterm or final, we did these "hackathons," which were debate-styled and honestly quite a fun substitute instead of an exam or essay. Every one of my classmates, including my table group, also seemed to enjoy the course, so I'm quite shocked by the other reviews.
