Hateinanny is an incredibly interesting that discusses fascism, anti-fascism, and the American far right. Professor Walsh does a really good job making the course timely and adapting his daily plans to give time for large class discussions about current events. Before each class, we had to submit a discussion post based on one of the readings (which were decently long). The class environment was very welcoming and I learned a ton. Would highly recommend taking this engagements class !

Walsh clearly understands his area of study very well and is willing to answer any question thrown at him, regardless of how controversial it may be. Most of his class is group discussions on readings done before class, with a short journal entry once a week in class on the discussion topics. His quizzes are easy to pass as long as you try; he never grades anything harshly. I took his class as part of the democracy cohort program, so I was already interested in this topic. Do not sign up if you are not interested in dense political theory and history, as the readings are extremely long and can be difficult to understand. While you don't always have to read the material to participate in conversation, it does help to answer the quiz questions. The worst thing about this class was not using any technology or Canvas, which made deadlines and submissions a little confusing at times. Additionally, we had to purchase a $60 course reader, which felt like overkill for an engagement. I liked the readings, but I know most did not and found them extremely boring, so sign up based on your own interest. Walsh is a fun guy to talk to outside of class as well, so if you take his class make sure to go to office hours at least once.
