I took this EGMT in Spring 2025. I am not a science person so this empirical engagement was perfect for me. This course is very enjoyable and it is very easy. The instructor is such an understanding person and really easy grader. I would absolutely recommend this course!

I actually took this class in the fall of 2024, and it was an easy A - I would recommend taking this to fulfill part of the engagements pathway. We were only graded on weekly reflections/homeworks and a final project, along with the required engagements experience and participation (but you can get by with not speaking up much). I didn't really have to do much work outside of class other than the readings, which were short and interesting. While the in-class lectures were kind of boring, having a walking tour once a week was always a plus. The material was very political and based on issues like race and protests, so we had some interesting discussions in class. It was nice to learn about the history of UVA, see places that I wouldn't normally stop at (such as the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers), and get to walk around Grounds and become familiar with it, especially since I took this during my first quarter here. Dr. G was very friendly and interested in getting to know each of us.

Class is the easiest A: you're only graded by weekly 1 page reflections and a group project at the end that you work on in class. Dr. G is so nice, caring and passionate. You just go on weekly walks around Grounds and learn about UVA's history. Very political/race-based, but informative. In-class lectures definitely get boring, though.

I highly suggest this engagement course. This class goes through the history of UVA. Homework is primarily short written reflections once or twice a week. Towards the beginning of the quarter you will also have a few readings but they don't take long and honestly were very interesting. Every week Gillet will lead you on a walking tour of UVA. This was probably my most memorable engagement. I learned a lot about UVA's history and visited a lot of places that I would have never stopped to pay attention to otherwise. We made stops at Special Collections Library, Harlem Renaissance Exhibit, the Memorial for Enslaved Laborers, the pavilions on the Lawn, remnants of the old medical amphitheater, and the graveyard on grounds. It is easy to get an A in this engagement with very little work.
