This was my favorite course of the semester! Professor Sewell is such a relatable and understanding professor. On the first day of class she asked us how we wanted to run the class and she followed our suggestions for the whole semester. This showed me she truly values student opinions and wants to create the best learning environment possible for us. I enjoyed the untraditional format of lecture, as most of our time was spent discussing the readings for that day. Professor Sewell did a great job supplementing readings with in class slides and videos. This course was low stress for me which allowed me to engage with the material more critically because I was not concerned about memorizing specific details. I enjoyed the readings and assignments for this course. The content is so much different than anything else I have come across in the a-school which I appreciated. If you have the chance to take this course, I cannot recommend it enough. #tCFF23

Overall, highly recommend if you are interested in any of the things in the course name or if you are a planning minor looking to fulfill the requirement. Professor Sewell is extremely nice and understanding of the heavy course load college students have. The course is weekly posts on the reading, a midterm, a short paper and a final paper. All of it is graded extremely kindly in my opinion you just have to put in effort and show you have come to class. With that said, attendance is not mandatory, but it is easier to grasp the ideas through lecture rather than through the readings (which are hard). I was able to get away with rarely doing the readings, but almost always going to lecture. I definitely recommend this course.

Easy and thought-provoking class. Professor Sewell is pretty laid-back and super knowledgable about the subject. Recommended for anyone interested in gender studies, even if you're not interested in urban planning or architecture - this class spends about 75% of its time on gender and 25% on urban planning/architecture. Readings can be a little dense/abstract, but make sure you at least skim them to get the general gist of the themes so you're ready to discuss them in small groups at the beginning of each class. Aside from that, it's just two papers and a midterm, all of which are graded generously.

Lots of readings every week and there is usually a 10-15 min group discussions at the beginning of the class, but attendance isn't mandatory. All of the assignments of graded generously and the class has interesting concepts. The readings can be confusing sometimes, so it's helpful to go to lecture.

Good class. Grade consists of a short paper, a midterm, a final, and participation/forum posts. All of these are graded relatively generously. Even though it's a fairly small class, attendance in lecture isn't mandatory. That being said, Sewell doesn't post slides to collab so if you don't go you're out of luck for that day. All things considered, the class is interesting, well-taught, and fairly straightforward to do well in.
