Professor Scanlon is one of the most straightforward professors I have had at UVA. There were absolutely no surprises on his exams. If you go to class, pay attention, and do a little bit of studying, you will be good to go. Another great thing about Professor Scanlon is he passes out a problem set and sheet of terms before each exam. The problems on the problem set are very similar to the ones on the exam, making it easy to study. He will only ask you to define terms listed on the sheet, and there are sometimes other questions related to the terms sheet. Ultimately, if you know everything on the sheet of terms and understand the math behind the problem set, you will ace his exams. With that being said, if you are not a good test taker, this class may not be for you. Your entire grade is made of 4 exams. Since the exams are easy, I personally enjoyed not having to worry about other assignments. Reading is entirely optional. If you are an EVSC major, I would recommend taking this with Scanlon. He is easily the best hydro professor.

This was a really excellent class. I was not expecting to enjoy hydrology too much (viewing it as just another major requirement) and I was a bit nervous about having to use physics again. However, Todd was a delight who did a fantastic job presenting a math-heavy subject in a really comprehensive and clear way. This is definitely a subject that could suffer from a poor professor, but this was not a problem. One thing I will say - make damn sure you understand the problems on the problem sets. A lot of the time, exam questions are almost identical to some of the questions from the sets. Todd allots one class before every exam to ask questions about these problems, so make sure you do them before this point. Also, while the textbook reading is not required, I found it to be extremely helpful. There are also practice problems with detailed answers within the textbook that are definitely worth doing.

Great teacher, really made the class easy to comprehend and went out of his way to help all the time. Also he always made sure we got our exams back quickly!

Attendance is not required. Lecture slides provide all you need to do well in the class.

The lectures could be dry, but the tests were pretty easy. There were problem sets assigned before each test but they were optional

Tough class if you are not great with Math. I didn't really go except 4 times all semester and got a C- but it was enough. Scanlon is straight forward and you get problem sets before every test that are pretty much telling you what to expect. Overall not too bad. Easy B if you attend lecture

I study for about 2 nights here and there for each exam and haven't gotten lower than a 90. Make sure you know how to do the problems on the problem set and you'll be good to go.
