I took Intro to Native American Studies with Professor Jernigan in the Fall of 2019, and I LOVED it! I think she maybe changed the name of the course, but it was one of my favorite courses at UVA. I so enjoyed learning from her and her experiences and just learning about Native Americans in general, because I knew close to nothing before. All of the readings she chose were great, but I especially liked "There, There" by Tommy Orange because it mixed history with modern-day. I also always felt like I could speak up in the class, which is rare because I sometimes feel like I do not have good opinions. The highlight of the class for me was the end-of-the-semester project. We were given lots of freedom to do whatever format we wanted, and I really enjoyed researching and making my project. There are not many opportunities to do a hands-on project in college, so I appreciated the opportunity. I still have great memories of this class two years later, so I suggest everyone take it ASAP!
