I took this class to help get rid of a math/science requirement. I would suggest it if you are not a math/science person! There are 3 tests... all online and open note/internet and you have a week to take them. He has curved all of them. There are also weekly reading quizzes, so you do have do skim the readings, but if you go to class you will be fine. Class is also easy to skip when you need to because you can take the learning catalytics questions anywhere that you have internet access. There are about 3-4 questions at the beginning of every class that count as a participation grade, instead of having location based clicker questions. Would highly recommend!
EASY A. Take this class. There are 3 open book tests which are super easy. There are also weekly quizzes that are open book. The book is online as a PDF and is FREE. I recommend the control F feature when taking tests. The in class questions are for participation only not accuracy. He posts recordings of the class on collab and part of the PowerPoint presentations. I skip class, leave every class early at the 5 minute break and still have an A. There are also multiple EXTRA CREDIT assignments that take less than 20 minutes to do. I got a 105% on the 2nd test.
This class is almost zero effort, you go to class for learning catalytics, which you don't even need to get the questions right to get full points. All the tests and quizzes are online, open notes, and "open web" in the words of professor Kelley. We are supposed to read but 95% of the class doesn't. You do not even need to go to this class to pull a B+ as long as you look at the power points. It's an extremely boring class but no work, so if that's what you're looking for, take this class.
Definitely a good choice for non-math/science majors. I didn't find the subject material particularly interesting at all, but it doesn't require a heavy workload and the professor works hard to make lectures interesting. Would've been an easy A if not for the trickiness of the reading quizzes & exams, so I would still recommend at least skimming the readings (use the online textbook- much easier to find things that way!), but participation is easy with learning catalytics & all the lectures are available online. Maybe not the most engaging class I've taken, but if you're looking for a way to fill your math/science requirements that doesn't require a whole lot of outside work or memorization, this class is a valid option.
Like the other reviews said, this is a really good class to take if you aren't a STEM major and want to get the science requirement out of the way. There are two take home midterms and a take home final that you are allowed to use your book for. They aren't too hard but you should make outlines of the chapters before you take them because there is a time limit and sometimes its stressful to find graphs/stats when a timer is running. The reading quizzes were probably the hardest part of the class because they had a lot of trick questions. There are a lot extra credit opportunities to make up for this though. The lectures are very long and not always that interesting but I tried to go to a lot of them because Professor Kelly is a really good speaker and genuinely knows a lot about the subject. The entire class is basically just about steel and aluminum (how its made, its CO2 emissions, supply/demand, etc...) so its not very interesting but pretty important. Everything you learn is just generally good to know, so if you're not a science person like me you will still get something out it. That being said I would definitely recommend the class. You don't have to go to all the lectures (there are learning catalytic questions that aren't location based) and you have a week to do take-home exams.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! It was supposed to be an easy A to fulfill a science requirement for a non-science student and it ended up being my worst class of the semester. All of the lectures are a drag, the reading quizzes are so tricky, and despite it being open note exams, they are extremely difficult. DO. NOT. TAKE.
This course is extremely challenging, not because of the content, but because of how boring it is. The lectures and content itself are incredibly dull. The textbook is written very weirdly and can be confusing to understand. Also, the reading quizzes are close to impossible and the tests are equally as hard and unfair. I took this class because I am a non-science major who is looking to get the requirement out of the way. At first, I put work into the class and would pay attention during lecture and read the textbook, but after I realized that this wouldn't help me on the reading quizzes and tests I stopped doing so. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS, seriously rethink taking this course if you are looking for a science requirement it is just too boring and unnecessarily difficult.
