This class covers a lot of information and is very lecture heavy. Professor Doney is a kind and passionate and seemed to want more student engagement during lectures, but lectures were usually pretty dead. There is a textbook chapter that corresponds with each lecture that can be helpful if there's a concept you don't understand. He posts all his slides so you can review them on your own. The final grade is the average of the 6 unit exams, which are take-home online on Canvas. Some of the questions on the exams are very straightforward but others can get very specific/tricky. He emphasized that he didn't want us to focus on memorizing a bunch of dates and rather focus on understanding the concepts. There are no other assignments so the workload is pretty light, just need to prepare for each exam. As a non-major I didn't find the class very interesting but it's certainly doable.
Professor Doney is great! The class consisted of take-home, closed-note tests (were not timed) and homework assignments designed so you can earn full credit. The tests were a bit tricky as there were a lot of select all questions that were easy to miss. The tests are take home, but he encourages students to take them in class to avoid Wi-fi issues and the opportunity to ask questions. DO IT!! He was incredibly helpful and genuinely appreciates students showing up. He will also answer clarifying questions and sometimes general questions that made the difference between an A and an A-.
There is no attendance and people stopped showing up about halfway through the semester, but if you’re interested in the topic or planning to take higher-level environmental classes, this course is definitely worth going to lecture for. Overall, I’m not an environmental science major and took this class to fulfill a discipline requirement, but it was easy and would definitely recommend
