Coby-Dillon was super nice with grading, and the workload was not bad. Readings are all short stories, and most of our class seemed to enjoy the vast majority of the stories (usually 2 short stories per class, took me about an hour each class but I'm a slow reader). As long as people participate and read the stories, discussions are fun, and Coby-Dillon keeps the conversation moving without controlling the direction entirely. We had to write two workshop pieces (short stories about pretty much anything you want, 6-12 pages double spaced) and one 4 page essay about one of the readings. Other short writings are interspersed throughout (quick exercises, feedback for classmates, etc.). As long as you put in some basic effort, it's pretty easy to get an A. #tCFfall22
The best class I've ever taken at UVA. Two short stories read and annotated before class each day, very interesting reads and doesn't feel like work if you grew up liking to read. Twice in the semester, you (and your classmates) write a piece that's around 10 pages long and you read and annotate your classmates' work and discuss it in class, and they'll discuss yours. In class is mostly discussion of the stories read, including specific formal elements of writing but also just your general thoughts on the class. My classmates and I all became very close and it's the only class where I can really say we became friends; some of my classmates and I have gotten together for movie nights months after our class finished. The work was very simple and consistent. Receiving my instructor and peer comments, both through annotations and out loud during workshop, have made me a stronger writer.
