I loved taking this class this semester, and I'm really happy I did it! You write two 6-10 paged short stories (each 10% of your overall grade), an academic essay (10%), some short exercises (the syllabus says 500 words but she's fine with only eight sentences, 20%), create a final portfolio (one of your stories heavily revised and a reflection, 30%), and participation is 20%. Honestly, if you put in the work, you'll have no trouble getting an A. You read a few short stories for each class, either from published authors or your classmates when workshops come around. Horn's coursework can seem daunting at first, with absence penalties and requiring you to print out everything for the class (which even I'll admit is ridiculous, considering how much money it costs to print a ten page story for sixteen people), but she's super nice and understanding. I had no creative writing experience before this class and nearly dropped it because I was so scared how my workshops would turn out, but this ended up being a great class.
