rude ...a typical art professor that thinks she knows everything there is to know, and will grade you harshly while claiming "art has no grade" and "everyone's work is beautiful in its own way". do not take this class. although there is no HW, you will NOT improve drawnig skill, or learn anything at all
Barbara Bernstein is a phenomenal, non-traditional art professor. It truly does not matter how much prior experience you've had in art because she grades you as an individual, not how your art compares to everyone else's. Another thing she emphasizes is growing as a person and being confident with yourself along with your art. But because of this, she will not show you your grade. I didn't find out my grade until the class was over with, which was frustrating in the beginning, but she really wants you to focus on your art to focus on art, not to get a good grade. She's also very understanding that we have other classes too that assign a ton of work so she doesn't give out homework which is GREAT. She's a very understanding lady but don't underestimate her, she takes this class very seriously but this was probably one of my favorite classes that helped me change my perspective on college. Highly recommend!
Bernstein is great. She thinks very artsy all of the time, which can be entertaining. One assignment was to just scribble one class period and at the end, during class critiques, she just kept saying how beautiful they all were. She's really great about judging you by your own improvement, not by comparison to the other people. She cares a lot about your art and if you make an effort to get to know her she will reciprocate it. You almost never have outside work, we only had one assignment that took about 5 minutes. She never demonstrates the concepts because she's very keen on you finding your own artistic vision. Sometimes the exercises seem ridiculous, but my artwork improved a lot through them somehow so she knows what she's doing. Overall a very great professor.
Amazing approach to art, appreciates all styles and encourages growth while still instructing technique. Fair and insightful critiques, and an incredibly interesting person with many interesting stories. Don't be lazy and you'll love this class. We studio sessions are intense, but I only received a single piece of HW for the class (a 1 hr drawing).
Pursuing a minor in art because of this class.
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! Prof. Bernstein is one of the best professors I had. She has a special approach for teaching. She is more focused on your progress instead of one particular drawing. A lot of us came to class and knew nothing but drawing, but she has been very patient and kept saying how amazing our works all were. I am grateful I had her. Lowkey telling you I heard other professors are kinda mean...
Definitely the professor to take drawing 1 with! Prof Bernstein is super nice and wants you to really enjoy drawing instead of making it a chore. Unlike most of the other classes that had multiple hours of homework every week, she gave us maybe three total assignments to take home that took maybe an hour each. I wasn't excited to take this class and just wanted to get it out of the way so that I could go on to photography, but I ended up really enjoying it! Also, she normally does it as a night class which can go either way, but keep in mind if you have a car, you can park for free in Culbreth which is super convenient.
Take drawing with Prof B! She is awesome and has a lot to teach her students about drawing. This isn't an ordinary course where you are given assignments and homework to complete and you are graded on the quality of the work. Also, don't expect this course to be where you learn how to draw polished and aesthetically pleasing figures, but expect to learn techniques that helps you focus on your work at hand. She emphasizes that concentration is key and she cares more about your individual progress throughout the course rather than if you can draw something that looks real. As long as you attend each class and complete the tasks that she gives out to the best of your ability, you are guaranteed an A. Also, don't use your phones in her class, she will call you out on it.
