Rachel is a great professor to have for this class! She is a grad student and understands the stressors that come with going back to school in a pandemic. She teaches "Writing About Home," where you literally discuss what home means to you, while reading writers' takes on what home is to them. You will discuss readings in class and have readings almost everyday for homework, but they are super easy and short. There are two papers you write that are about 1500 words, and a final project which is a creative writing take on a place in Charlottesville. I would go to her office hours for help on essays, and she would always give me feedback and help me work through my ideas. She is an absolute joy to have as a professor and I 100% recommend this class if you are looking for an easy ENWR. I ended with an A!
Rachel is an awesome teacher and makes the class super enjoyable. Personally, I enjoy writing when it's about things that I am interested in knowing more about and I came into this course thinking it would be like most English classes where I am stuck reading and writing about things that I do not care for. However, the topic "Writing About Home" actually proved to be super interesting. I love thinking about the past, so I was pleased to find out that nostalgia and how the definition of home changes with time and depending on the person were basically the premise of the whole class. The topic being intriguing and interesting to talk about makes the class enjoyable, which can be a major positive in a semester where you have enough classes that you are not too fond of. Rachel is super understanding and meets outside of class, even 1 on 1, if possible and necessary. As a grad student, she is way more relatable than most professors ever could be because she is not too far removed from our own position as an undergrad student. There are many class discussions that you get credit for by participating and just making an insightful comment that reflects the readings you do. I actually enjoyed many of the conversations as they felt like seminars or debates with people exchanging opinions and values relating to topics we read. The readings usually are not too long, but I am a slow reader so consistent readings were the only negative in the class for me. Overall, I would absolutely recommend taking this class with Rachel, as she is amazing and many of my friends in other ENWR 1510's said they did not enjoy their topics and/or teachers. With section, both the professor and topic are amazing!
