Mr. Broyles is definitely not the greatest teacher. His grading makes the writing requirement so difficult, it was literally impossible for me to get an A on any of my papers and none of the other students that I talked to could do it either. The topic, Holidays, was unbearably boring and I really dreaded this class every week. Not a great topic nor a great teacher.
Writing about place was not the most interesting class. There is a weekly writing each week along with 2-3 short writing assignments that most be kept in a journal/ notebook. Each Friday there was a featured writer (classmate) whose weekly writing piece was analyzed and critiqued by the class in a discussion format. The notebook is collected at random so make sure you stay on schedule with the writing assignments. A total of 3 essays had to be written over the course of the semester which is average, but many of the writing prompts assigned (with little time to be completed) were unclear and Mr. Broyles often had a hard time explaining exactly what he wanted from these essays; needless to say there were rarely any A's on these essays. The course also included some sort of reading almost every night which were not always interesting. Actual class time involved discussing the assigned reading; there were a lot of times of awkward silence and eventually Mr. Broyles would attempt to guide the conversation unsuccessfully. Overall, Mr. Broyles meant well but is not one of the best instructors.
LOVE THIS CLASS! Not sure why people aren't a fan of him because this was my favorite class I took my first semester. I got As on the first 2 papers and a B on the last one, which I expected, but I ended with an A in the class. His office hours are so interesting and he gives you hints about what he wants when you get on his good side. Overall such an awesome teacher who makes a boring topic super interesting.
