Suad really cares about your success as a student. If you're taking this class to cement your understanding of Arabic and learn the language as a permanent addition to your life, take Suad. Other sections suffice if you want a similar experience but a more lax environment.

This is my favorite class that I have ever taken at UVA. She's not teaching the 1010 level for Fall 2024, but if you ever can, take this class with Suad Mohammad. I came into this class with absolutely zero knowledge of Arabic, and was totally prepared to be overwhelmed and feel like I was getting nowhere. That is the exact opposite of what happened. The entire department is so excited that you are there and so ready to help you, and the program is perfectly set up for people who can't understand a letter in the alphabet to get to an actual paragraph by the end of the semester. Suad Mohammad is always very available, super excited to help students, and happy to see you whenever. Every professor in the department who teaches the intro language classes is wonderful though, you really can't go wrong. The work is through a series of textbooks that is pretty standard for teaching Arabic to English speakers, so your homework will typically be a few exercises in the book. You can get away with about 5 minutes of studying a night, but if you take just a little bit longer than that to really learn your vocabulary or go over things just a tad, your language skills are going to skyrocket. Take this class, I am so glad that I did.

Professor Suad is possibly one of the best teachers I've ever had. She is clearly very passionate about the language and tries her best to foster a love of Arabic in her students. I always felt welcome in her class and never hesitated to ask questions or stop by during her office hours. Arabic is a very challenging language to learn and if you're going in completely new you will probably find the class difficult. It is, however, very rewarding once everything starts to click.

Great Arabic professor. I'm very happy with how much I've learned in just one semester with her. You do have the class every day though, so be ready to put in some work learning the vocab and grammar. Still, the workload is very manageable and she is very approachable if you're just honest about what you don't understand. You can't go wrong with her.

absolutely destroyed my confidence and self esteem, I cried over this class so many times. we never understood why we got the grades we did- she's probably great in person but Zoom university was so stressful and frustrating. #tCF2020

Suad is the best Arabic professor. I had her for all three years that I took Arabic at UVa. She really is passionate about the language and teaching it to students. If you take her class seriously, you will learn a ton.

Suad Mohamed is the best. She makes learning a typically difficult language fun and easy to learn. She grades fairly. Do the homework and spend some time memorizing vocabulary ahead of time and you will learn very quickly.
