Bailey’s class was definitely one of my favorites during the fall semester. He focuses more on the engineering process and lets you experience it hands-on with a semester-long project and you get to work with elementary school kids, which is pretty fun and different from the typical class here. It’s not that intense in the beginning, but near the end of the semester it WILL become more time-consuming. However, it was still one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. Bailey himself is a great professor and what he taught will come up again and again in future classes in some form. Just make sure that you follow what he says for formatting on presentations and wikis and such. You’d be surprised how many people get points off for not doing this.

This class is different than the other 1620 class, but in a good way. Instead of going through the different majors, Pr. Bailey shows you the design process real engineers go through by actually making you go through it yourself. You are put into small groups and have to create some engineering project throughout the semester. Through it, you are exposed to different engineering majors in order to complete the project. This class is TIME CONSUMING AND STRESSFUL, but the result at the end makes it worthwhile (our class designed collaborative designs for elementary school kids and actually got to test out our designs at the school). If you're ready to learn the real design process and want a worthwhile challenge, take this with Bailey.

Bailey is the best professor to have for this class. You learn the most about the engineering process through his intense, semester long, group project design. While the project allows for a lot of freedom, you will definitely be spending some late nights in Rice and pulling your hair out towards the end. Bailey is fair, but if you can get a professor that only does easy, "fun" things, you might want to consider switching. In conclusion, Bailey is great and his class is extremely helpful, but the stress and potentially lower grade that accompanies it is not fun.

Definitely take this class with Professor Bailey! His section is much more hands-on, and therefore more enjoyable, than other sections. He doesn't lecture about each different engineering discipline which is what I thought this class would be for. Instead, Professor Bailey challenges you to think in an engineering way through fun projects. There is a lot of outside groupwork, especially towards the end of the semester, but if you're willing to put in the work, you will gain so much from Bailey's class.

Do not take this course. He says at the beginning "I'm the hardest section." He means it. You will not learn anything except the concept of pain.

Prof Bailey definitely made a positive impact on my first semester at UVA. Though his section is notoriously the hardest, it is definitely the most rewarding. If you're willing to put in the work to do well in this class, I would highly recommend taking it. This class definitely showed me how rewarding a career in engineering will be.

bailey's a good professor, he uses his own textbook though which gets boring. mostly group work, with a large semester-long project. learning a lot, valuable course. no large writing or online assignments, would recommend.

The professor you have for this course will determine most everything about this course. Prof. Bailey will make it clear that his section will require the most work, but it will also be the most worthwhile. He is completely correct. Other sections may "learn" the same material and get the same credit by building legos or other small scale projects, which is fine, but Bailey's section involves a group project on a much larger scale. If you are willing to commit and let that project be an integral part of your first semester, truly forming connections with your peers, professor, and especially your group members, sign up for Professor Bailey's section.

Prof. Bailey is very enthusiastic and is willing to put in time for this class. It's obvious from previous reviews that Bailey's class does involve the most work. To alleviate this, make sure to go to office hours to get ideas reviewed by him. The most stressful part of the class was having to change your project idea several times close to the deadline.

Bailey will tell you straight up on the first day of class that his section of 1620 will be more work than the other sections, but if you put your heart into the large project that is like 75% of your grade, you will have fun and do just fine. That is completely true. Our project was to create a scholastic obstacle course as a class for the 1st and 4th graders of Clark Elementary school. The class was split into groups and each group came up with their own part of the course, involving sensors and an actual obstacle area that could have been built out of materials such as pvc or wood. I will say just make sure you have good chemistry with your group and put work into the class. If you are someone that would be fine with it, then you would probably have fun.
