Gies is an amazing professor. He makes an effort to get to know his students, and makes lecture very engaging. He even invites the class to dinner at his house one evening in the semester. He's also very knowledgable about the literature he is teaching, and has met (or is even close friends with) several of the authors. He gives out mini quizzes (5 questions) at the beginning of each class to see that you have done the reading. He will drop your lowest score and gives you an extra credit opportunity to drop another one. They are very straightforward and even if you just skim the readings you could get an 8/10. The exams and final paper were also very straightforward. Gies is a professor who cares more about what you actually learn in his class than testing you on hard material. All in all, this was my favorite class last semester!

Professor Gies is the man. He clearly cares about all of his students, and he is willing to work with you if you have a particularly rough finals schedule and are looking for an extension on his final paper.

Professor Gies is the most intelligent and caring professor at UVA, hands down. He sincerely wants all of his students to succeed. With that, as long as you do the readings and memorize the dates and authors of all of the works you read, you'll be fine. Just pay attention in class and participate.

Professor Gies is the best Spanish professor I have had at UVA. He is extremely knowledgable and has met many of the authors covered in the course. He is highly respected in the Spanish literature community. Also, he brings his dog Chico to class!
