It's unfortunate that this is a requirement class because I think the discussion that would come along with it would be much better served if majors weren't forced to take it. I know almost nothing about English or analyzing texts and it made it difficult for me to contribute sufficiently in this course. Professor Clowes is an incredibly nice professor and is very kind, but the discussion component of this class was annoying, as it was almost entirely student led and with little input from Clowes. Also, the amount of papers and exams for the course is kind of crazy. Three papers, a mid term, final exam, and then final paper seems like a bit much to me.

Professor Clowes is a pretty nice lady, but she doesn't really know how to lead a discussion. Classes end up feeling like a gigantic waste of time. The reading is pretty interesting, but there is a lot of it. I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you're a Russian major.
