He is pretentious and gives astronomical amounts of reading.

I am a Middle Eastern Studies major and felt that it was necessary to take a class on Islam. That being said, I struggled to pay attention in class because I felt the material was too abstract. While there was a lot of material, tests seem fair. He gives out a study guide that highlights the major points. Professor Sachedina is a very caring professor, but his subject just wasn't for me.
This class was fun and interesting, but unnecessarily hard. The reading load was absurd and the tests were very difficult. If you are interested in the subject matter - which I thought I was - take it, but you should reconsider if you are just looking for an easy non-western course.
Sachedina is a GREAT professor. Very smart, has written a bunch of books, etc. Class is a bit difficult with a lot of reading. Do the reading and you should be fine. If not, Sachedina will yell at the class and tell you to leave. Not a bad class though. Very well structured lectures. Siebeking is a great TA.
I loved this class! I love professor Sachedina! After taking this class I decided to take Muhammad and the Qur'an 311 which professor Sachedina teaches. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is interesting (esp. the Lings) and you will do well on the tests if you do the reading.
Sachedina is an incredible lecturer. You learn a great deal in his courses, and he makes it enjoyable to learn the material. Tests require a good bit of studying, but it is not overly difficult to get in the A-range for this class. Give him your full attention in class, because he is prone to angrily call you out in class.
The material was interesting most of the time, but the lectures and the readings usually didn't coincide. There was a lot of readings and it was difficult to keep up with.
It's not the easiest class because Professor Sachedina covers so much material, but he's a great professor and always willing to help.
