Easy yet mentally challenging class. I highly recommend it for anyone thinking of studying medicine.
Childress seems like a really nice guy and he certainly knows what he's talking about, but I thought this class was a little disappointing. I'm pre-med and a religious studies major so I thought this would be right up my alley, but if I learned one thing it's that I really dislike principles-based ethics. I'm not entirely sure that this class should be housed in the religion department because there is virtually no theology presented. It's the first word of the course's title but the last in practice. If you are interested in bioethics and want to learn how to talk about ethics in a practical, secular setting, it's the perfect course for you. If you are interested in religious ethics, meh, take Mathewes' class in the spring. Oh and the midterm sucks, not because the material is hard, but because you have 1/2 the amount of time you need to write what you need to. Good test of your ability to pencil down a bunch of bullcrap as fast as you can. Nelson's a nice dude.
even though many people say that this is a great class, lecture is downright boring. However, love discussion section because you debate topics. Do the readings and the midterm and final have study guides so its pretty easy.
Great class. highly recommended. Learn a great deal about bioethics.
Very interesting class. I took it under the impression that it'd be my blowoff course, and that definitely hasn't been the case. It requires a lot of reading and you really need to know what the authors of the different articles think. Childress is very knowledgable in his field and even if you don't plan on using this course in your major, it helps you gain a greater understanding on medical-ethical issues.
Really fascinating class. Challenges your views and broadens understanding with the lens of bioethicists.
This is an incredible class! The reading for the first week is most important; it gives you the terms you will use for the semester. After that...the readings are really only necessary for discussions. the midterm was straightforward..lots of material but if you did the study guide you will not be surprised by anything on the exam. Childress is so intriguing, the cases are interesting, and the TA's really care about you. Take this if you can.
the topics were really interesting. the lectures are sometimes hard to follow unless you do all the reading beforehand but my TA was really good at synthesizing the lectures which was really helpful
Good class. Covers important ethical issues within medicine today
