This class could have been much more enjoyable. In the end, it was more like a history class with real tests and little musical enjoyment. Also, the professor is rather apathetic towards students, with little regard for personal style. The grading was far too subjective.

Shatin is not enthusiastic and does not have very good taste in music. The course will force you to write in bunch of different styles and whether you like that or not it will probably give you ideas in your own songwriting. That being said you're allowed to take your own spin on every assignment and you'll get an A if you do all the work. This style of class can be frustrating because it puts a grade and a final word on subjective artistic matter but if you like music you should enjoy most of the class's discussions. This course examines songwriting rather than teaching you how to write good songs.
