I found this course really fascinating and really helpful in understand concepts in other courses. I loved how this course made you think about materials your work with every day, and why certain things happen when stressing/using them. I, personally, did not find the need to attend the lectures, but I am sure it would definitely have reinforced certain content that I got lost in. That being said, there is absolutely no room for people who do not read the book in this class. The book is essential to understanding the class. And to be quite honest, it is a fascinating read. I would highly recommend this class and Zhigilei as the teacher of the class. He does not place ridiculous participation/attendance crap on you. If you do not want to come, he does not care. If you want to ask questions, he is always ready to field them, and if you don’t, you are not penalized for remaining silent.

Very hard intro course, and his tests are not really based on his lectures. Make sure to read the textbook and absorb as much as you can from it
