Professor Straight is an absolutely amazing lecturer, and this class serves as a great introduction and deeper dive into the politics surrounding global development. In this class, we were lucky to have many unique and notable guest lecturers from all walks of life. Every lecture was focused on a different topic, and there was usually a guest lecturer for every new theme. The grade is split between participation, policy memos and exams (midterm and final). The policy memos were tough. Not because these assignments were particularly lengthy, but rather because we were tasked with creating policy recommendations succinctly and within one page. It was challenging, but rewarding. The exams are all short answer and essays, which allowed plenty of room for partial credit if you couldn't remember every detail. The class discussed many topics throughout and served as an excellent change of pace from more theoretical politics classes. As someone who took this class outside of my major (and also outside of Batten) the class was extremely interesting and worthwhile and I would recommend it to anyone.
