Gilliam is a really nice guy, and is really available to talk to outside of class. This class is very interesting if you are from VA, but maybe not as much for out of staters. If you're looking for an easy 3000 level history class, this is a good bet

Best class I've taken at UVa. Gilliam gives great lectures and is very approachable. He gives students flexibility with the term paper which makes writing much more enjoyable.

If you have a problem with Mr. Gilliam on a personal level, than something is clearly wrong with you. He is incredibly kind, caring, and accessible to his students (maybe more so than any professor I have ever had). However, he does give a pretty big reading load, and the research paper is more of a burden than it needs to be (we aren't actual historians, haha). Nevertheless it is a very good course on Virginia, but I would recommend it only to students with a very big passion for Virginia history, others may find the work too tedious.

Mr. Gilliam is the most accessible professor I've had yet at UVA. There's a decent amount of reading, and the subject material can be pretty dull at times, but he's a very easy grader and can help with almost any problems you have.

Professor Gilliam is one of, if not the most, accessible and helpful professors at the University. Every semester he invites the entire class (in groups of 12) to his home to have brunch with him and his wife. The course consists of a mid-term (10%), a group project (25%), a 6 page research paper (35%), and a final exam (30%) and he's a pretty easy grader. Don't let the research paper deter you- I really enjoyed it (besides, Gilliam lets you submit as many drafts as you want). Take the class and get to know Prof. Gilliam- he's a great guy. And when he starts to tell a story in class, sit back and enjoy.
