Absolutely loved this class! I would 100% recommend this course to anyone with even a slight interest in the Civil War. Professor Janney is a super interesting/engaging lecturer and a genuinely fun and caring person. She is so knowledgeable and answers any and all questions. The grading was straightforward based on 2 papers, a midterm (IDs and an essay), take home final, and discussion participation. Time during lecture flew by but still went in depth about military, social, and political history during/after the war.

Professor Janney is fantastic. I would absolutely recommend taking a class with her. She is passionate, detail-oriented (but not to the point of getting lost in the details), and excellent at explaining the Civil War in both its contemporary and modern contexts. I thought the class balanced the descriptions of battles with the descriptions of the effects on everyday people extremely well, and that was due to Janney's lectures. I learned so much in this class and it was absolutely worth my time. Grading is based on midterm and final take-home papers, as well as map quizzes taken in discussion (easy, don't worry), and two debates with papers on emancipation and secession (also not too difficult).
