Very knowledgeable professor, but do not take this class if you aren't interested in politics.

Not too bad of a class, as long as you keep up with the readings you will be fine

Good class that covers the political aspects of the reasons the Civil War broke out. Holt is an engaging lecturer though there are a lot of notes to be written down.

This class was enjoyable, but fairly frustrating when you arrive at the end and realize all you ever had to do was read Professor Holt's book to basically find all the information that he ever presented in lecture. Nonetheless, he's a fairly animated lecturer at moments, and the content is interesting and interpreted in a novel manner. I would recommend taking the class, but reading Professor Holt's book at the beginning rather than the end. And all the other readings can be skimmed, except for Uncle Tom's Cabin, about which you'll have to write a paper.
