Could not ask for a better professor. Onuf know everything anyone could know about Jefferson and early American history in general. He keeps lectures funny and entertaining too. The midterm was very tough, but you can still manage a good grade as it is only worth 20% of the overall grade. 50% is based on participation in discussion and the last 30% is based on a final paper. No final exam. Sad to see Onuf retire.

This was an awesome class. A good deal of work, but anyone who is at all interested in Jefferson or the time period should definitely take this class. Onuf is a fantastic lecturer and professor, and fall 2011 is his last semester. Don't miss out

Awesome class. Lectures were entertaining. There was a ton of reading, but most of it was interesting. Take this class if you get the chance!

Hands down best class I have taken at UVA. There is an unbearable amount of reading, but this class is totally worth it.

The lectures for this class are super interesting. Professor Onuf is extremely knowledgeable and funny. However, there is an unmanageable amount of reading and it's fairly difficult to get above a B. However, if you put in the work and do the readings you should be fine.

Very fun class, one of the best courses at UVA. Onuf is a great professor and knows his stuff. It's not easy but you'll learn a lot and this will be a course you'll remember.

This class is unbelievable! My favorite class ever at UVA, and definitely one of the most rewarding academic experiences I've had. The lectures are hilarious and thought-provoking. No learning dates or looking at powerpoint slides. It was a whole new way to understand history. Spring 2011 may be Onuf's last semester teaching it, don't miss out!

Awesome class. Onuf is hilarious and very engaging. He doesn't allow laptops in class which I thought would kill me but ended up not being a huge deal. LOTS of reading, but if you only get the general gist of each source you'll be fine. 1 midterm, 4 small review essays and a final paper (your topic - approved by TA). You learn to better understand Jefferson's politics and important by understanding who he was as a person and the context in which he grew up. Infinitely interesting and a must-take for UVA students
