Ive taken a bunch of AP History in HS and UVA history courses but this one has been the first challenge to actually challenge and improve my skills as a historian. Prof Unlu is no-nonsense and will grade you with the intention of improving your abilities, not afraid to get into the weeds with your bibliography, titles, formatting, everything. He holds you to a high standard. However, he is ultimately going to give you a great grade if you try. Tons of reading, 3 papers (40%, 20% and 20% of your grade) + 20% from participation. Learning new historical frameworks in lecture, as boring as that may sound, was the most enjoyable part of this class and what would make me recommend it to anyone who loves history. Stuff like "Longue Durée," Wallerstein's World Systems Theory, and vertical analysis applied to Ottoman Empire History. It Is hard, worth it, and you will do well in it.
