HIEU 3501

I took Linstrum's Postwar European Memory through Film seminar, and it was my favorite class I have taken so far at UVA. Linstrum is such an interesting dude with so many good points. I took this class with so many smart and interesting classmates, and I often felt like I was not performing as well as the others. Linstrum talked with me about how to prepare better for class and reassured me that I was doing well, regardless of how I felt. Our class was based on a midterm, a research paper of ~10 Pages (which he gave us ample time to write and research, as well as checkpoints, which were very helpful), and a final. The final and Midterm were from shots from films we watched - quotes from readings, among other things. The exams were more than fair, and very interesting how much freedom we had to discuss our thoughts about it. I've spoken to other people who have taken a 3501 seminar, and I definitely would recommend Linstrum, an all-around great guy. The only slightly negative thing about this class is the weekly workload. There is a BUNCH of reading for this class of pretty dense material ~120 pages weekly, on top of a 1.5-4 hour film. You don't have to know the pages by heart, just the main points to discuss in class. All in all, this was a great class, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in it and the people I've met.
