This class was horrible to follow. He doesn't use lecture slides which makes it harder to take notes but if you really pay attention you can follow. DO THE READINGS, i didn't and Im trying to prepare for the final and its not good.

Not a very interesting class. Professor Floyd chose to discuss very odd sections of British history that did not seem to fit very well together. He also doesn't lecture with a power point or any form of slides and has a lisp so taking notes is somewhat difficult. I would not recommend this class.
Lectures were a bit drab and boring. Didn't learn much that was useful. We had a research project that involved running around Alderman library searching for pointless information. Wouldn't really recommend this class.
Richard Floyd is not a very accessible teacher--he doesn't seem like he actually enjoys teaching--he's more of a research historian. This class required a lot more work than other 2000 level history courses I've taken, and the subject matter he chose to discuss was not interesting. We didn't really talk about the type of British history I had in mind--it was more focused on social problems. But the class was really disjointed and a lot of what we covered didn't really make sense. Three papers, a library research project, midterm, final, and participation in sections.
This was a good class, although not quite what I expected. This is more of a class about modern England, and there isn't much covering Scotland, Ireland, or Wales. Professor Floyd does make sure you're aware of this on the first day of class, though, so it isn't false advertising or anything. The class is based around important themes rather than taking a chronological approach, so keeping everything mentally organized can be rather difficult (since we've been trained to learn history in the order in which it happened). The readings are fun and no what you'd expected for a history class: Pride and Prejudice, the Time Machine, etc. Start working on the Library Research Project SOON! Don't wait till the last minute or it won't be pretty. Adrian is an awesome TA with a great sense of humor, a wonderful connection with the students, and a firm foundation in modern British affairs. His grading is a difficult-"ish," but he's super cool. :)
