Review Summary Updated April 5, 2026

This introductory course offers a heavily practical overview of civil engineering, anchored by weekly assignments and a demanding semester-long project that heavily tests your Civil 3D skills. The software is notoriously frustrating but highly valuable for industry work, so expect to spend considerable outside hours self-teaching and troubleshooting. Grading is generous and tests are straightforward if you keep up with the slides, though consistent attendance is strongly recommended since the lecture material can occasionally feel dry. You will easily succeed if you manage your time, start the final design work early, and actively use office hours when the technical tasks pile up.

Professor Smith is a very solid and compelling professor. He is a great resource! He is also very patient and fair. Excellent instructor! The AutoCAD component of the class is rigorous.

Smith is a great professor, he knows what he is talking about. The final project is fun but AutoCad gets annoying. The class sometimes gets dull.

An easy class if you pay attention and do most of the reading. Make sure to do your assignments and there's no reason not to get a high B or an A in the class. The only problem is you basically have to teach yourself Civil3D, so be prepared to spend lots of hours just clicking buttons.

The subject is rather boring, but is useful. The class is 75 minutes which is a bit too long, so bring other work to do and sit in the back. The professor is great! The survey lab is pretty fun. Use The Hive for AutoCad and CivilCad.

Professor Smith is a nice guy but this class is terribly boring and dry. The material covers a bunch of outdated things with some interesting things thrown in there here and there. It doesn't help that he doesn't really act that interested in the class. Also the tests are sometimes wordy and wayyy too long for the amount of time alloted but if you can speed write you should be ok.

The material taught in this class is really dry, but Smith does a good job of trying to make it interesting. Talking about real-world examples was always fun and helpful. The tests are fair, and the group work is not hard, but does help you grasp the material

B. Smith is an awesome professor, he is very organized and makes class fun. He is very interactive and it is easy to pay attention in class. His tests come right from the class slides.
